What Is A Wafer Style Valve?

A wafer style valve, also commonly known as a wafer butterfly valve, is a type of valve characterized by its compact, flat, and disc-shaped design. Here are some key features and aspects of a wafer style valve:

Design and Construction

Compact and Flat: The valve body is designed to be thin and flat, resembling the shape of a wafer. This design allows for easy installation in confined spaces.

Disc and Seat: The valve disc, which controls the flow of media, is typically made of materials such as ductile iron, bronze, stainless steel (SS304, SS316), or other suitable materials. The seat, where the disc seals against, is often made of materials like NBR, EPDM, VITON PTFE, or brass/bronze to ensure a tight seal.

Function and Operation

Butterfly Action: The valve disc rotates on a central axis, typically 90 degrees, to open or close the valve. This butterfly action allows for quick and easy operation.

Medium Pressure: Wafer style valves are generally suitable for medium pressure applications. The specific pressure rating will depend on the materials used and the design of the valve.

Zero Leakage: When properly installed and maintained, wafer style valves can provide zero leakage under rated pressure conditions.

Materials and Media Compatibility

Material Options: The body of the valve can be made of cast iron, ductile iron, or other suitable materials depending on the application and media being controlled.

Media Compatibility: Wafer style valves are suitable for a wide range of media, including fresh water, waste liquids, seawater, vapor, food, medicine, oils, acids, and other fluids. The specific materials used in the valve will determine its compatibility with different media.

Installation and Maintenance

Easy Installation: The compact design of wafer style valves makes them easy to install in tight spaces. They are often connected using wafer connections.

Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as inspecting the seat and disc for wear and tear, and ensuring proper lubrication, can extend the lifespan of the valve.

Applications

Various Industries: Wafer style valves are widely used in various industries, including water treatment, food and beverage processing, chemical processing, and others.

Portable Water: Due to their ability to provide a tight seal and withstand a range of pressures and temperatures, wafer style valves are often used in portable water systems.
