Introduction of Flat Gate Valve

The flat gate valve is a sliding valve whose closing member is a parallel gate, and its closing member can be a single gate or a double gate with a spreading mechanism in between.
The pressing force of the gate to the valve seat is controlled by the medium pressure acting on the floating gate or the floating valve seat. If it is a flat gate valve with a double gate, the opening mechanism between the two gates can supplement this pressing force.
The flat gate valve can be divided into a manual flat gate valve, pneumatic flat gate valve, and electric flat gate valve according to the driving mode.
According to the purpose and use, it can be divided into flat gate valve with diversion hole, flat gate valve without diversion hole, oil field flat gate valve, and pipeline flat gate valve.

Key Features of Flat Gate Valve

The flat gate valve seat adopts the structure of O-ring seals and pretightening float valve seat, the soft sealing inlays fluoroplastic, it provides the function of double sealings: fluoroplastic to metal and metal to metal. And at the same time, the fluoroplastic can remove the dirt of the gate disk.

Of the metal to metal sealing, there is a grease injection structure outside the valve, grease injects the sealing part through the seat, in this way achieves the aim of zero leakage.

Through conduit gate valve always coincide with the sealing surface, whether the disc is full open-or full-closed; sealing surface to be protected from scouring by media dilectly, thereby extending the service life. In full- time, smooth channel for the direct and flow resistance coefficient is extremely small, no pressure drop and head loss.

Working Principle of Flat Gate Valve

Flat gate valve is mainly composed of valve body, gate plate, valve stem, sealing ring and other components. Its working principle is to rotate the valve stem to make the gate move up and down in the valve body, thereby cutting off or connecting the fluid. The metal-to-metal sealing method is used between the gate plate and the valve seat to ensure good sealing performance under high pressure difference. In addition, the flow channel design of the flat gate valve allows the fluid to pass through the valve with less resistance, thereby reducing energy consumption.

Common Types of Gate Valves

The different types of gate valves can be determined on the basis of their movement and closure as well. Wafer gate valve, spring-loaded gate valves, ball gate valves, swing gate valve, and diaphragm gate valve.

Wafer Gate Valve
They include a butterfly or wafer style disc and allow straight flow without hindrance. Moreover, it can be used interchangeably.

Spring Loaded Valve
It can be further classified into two types spring-loaded in-line and spring-loaded Y. They are the most common and easy-to-understand valves. The spring-loaded in-line help in preventing any kind of pressure surge in the line. On the other hand, the spring-loaded Y has a similar function as the in-line but its moveable parts allow easy inspection and servicing while it is still connected to the system.

Ball Gate Valve

This type of valve consists of a spring-loaded ball placed mainly on the valve sealing seat to create an appropriate seal and prevent the backflow of the fluid.

Diaphragm Gate Valve

This type consists of a rubber diaphragm that flexes with the increase in pressure. In case of backward pressure, the diaphragm will seal the valve to prevent the flow. They are an ideal choice in a vacuum and low-pressure applications.

Swing Gate Valve

They consist of the titling disk that opens when inlet pressure is applied and shuts off when the inlet pressure decreases.

Material of Flat Gate Valve Construction

Gate valves are used in a wide variety of applications and may come into contact with an assortment of media. When selecting a gate valve, the material used to construct the valve is a critical decision to prevent premature valve failure or system delays. In order to select the proper valve material there are several important criteria to be considered:
The composition of the media in contact with all wetted (exposed) parts
● Service temperatures
● Operating pressures
● Effectiveness of coating on materials
● Material availability and cost
● Compatibility of materials with injected media.
● How long the valve will be exposed to the media.
There are organizations dedicated to developing and maintaining standards for valves and materials in particular environments. Gate valves are available in many different materials. Valves can be specified by the National Association for Corrosion Engineers (NACE) and the American Petroleum Institute (API) for their ability to handle strong and corrosive media.

Common Problem of Flat Gate Valve

Q: What are the 2 types of gate valves?

A: Gate valves can be divided into two main types: Parallel and wedge-shaped. The parallel gate valves use a flat gate between two parallel seats, and a popular type is the knife gate valve designed with a sharp edge on the bottom of the gate.

Q: What is a slab gate valve used for?

A: This type of valve is very useful in transportation pipe lines for gas, crude oil and oil products. The Slab Gate Valve is through conduit and piggable. Slab Gate Valve has been designed to minimize pressure drop and catch foreign materials such as slurries into the disc cavity to keep clean the sealing surface areas.

Q: What are the components of a gate valve?

A: A gate valve consists of a valve body, seat and disc, a spindle, gland, and a wheel for operating the valve. The seat and the gate together perform the function of shutting off the flow of fluid.

Q: What is the difference between expanding gate valve and slab gate valve?

A: Expanding gate valves include two units-a gate and segment-in contrast with slab gate valves, which have one unit. The gate and segment units collapse against each other for travel and separate when the valve is fully opened or fully closed to affect a mechanical seal.

Q: What is the most common used gate valve?

A: Solid wedges are the most common because of their simplicity and strength. They can be installed in any position, are suitable for almost all fluids, and are practical for turbulent flow. Flexible wedge gate valves are commonly used in steam systems.

Q: What are the three common types of gate valve designs?

A: There are three types of discs used in gate valves: Flexible wedges, split wedges, and solid wedges. Like the stem, each disc has a specific use case. Wedges allow the application of greater pressure, which is why the wedge shape is common. Solid wedges are the most common.

Q: When not to use a gate valve?

A: Because of this, gate valves may not be the best choice for applications that require frequent operation or fast cycle times. Gate valves are most commonly controlled by a manual handwheel, but electric and pneumatic actuation options are also available.

Q: What is the difference between a gate valve and a wedge gate valve?

A: A wedge valve has a lower flow rate than its gate valve counterpart due to the sealing wedge being held in place between two slanted seats. Standard gate valves are linear, quarter-turn devices that regulate liquid flow. When opened, they completely block off the fluid path.

Q: Which is better ball valve or gate valve?

A: Flow Capacity: A gate valve can provide larger flow capacity than a ball valve as they are typically offered in larger diameters. Opening and closing speed: A ball valve is better suited for applications that require faster opening and closing speed or during emergencies due to its quarter turn on/off operation.

Q: What are advantages of flat gate valve?

A: The flow resistance is small, and the flow resistance without shrinkage is similar to the flow resistance of a short tube. The flat gate valve with pilot hole is installed on the pipeline and can also be cleaned directly with a vacuum cleaner. Since the gate makes the two valve seat surfaces change, the flat gate valve can also be applied to the medium with suspended particles. The sealing surface of the flat gate valve is actually automatically positioned, and the sealing surface of the valve seat is not damaged by the thermal deformation of the valve body. In addition, thermal elongation of the valve stem does not overload the sealing surfaces, even if the valve is closed in a cold state. In addition, when the valve is closed, the flat gate valve without the pilot hole does not require high precision in the flapper closing position, so the opening and closing position can be controlled by the electric flat valve stroke.

Q: Why are ball valves better than gate valves?

A: Ball valves use a handle to control the placement of a hollow, perforated sphere in the mechanism. When the handle is turned, the hole immediately opens or closes the water flow. This mechanism is a lot quicker than a gate valve because a ball valve needs only a 90-degree turn to go from open to completely closed.

Q: Are all gate valves full port?

A: By design, gate valves have full-port ports. This means that the valve port size equals the inner diameter of the connecting pipe. Full-bore gate valves allow fluid to flow freely without obstruction and without creating a pressure drop within the pipeline.

Q: What is the top of a gate valve called?

A: The gate valve differs from ball, plug and butterfly valves in that the closure element, called the disc, gate, or obturator, rises on the base of a stem or spindle out of the waterway and into the valve top, called the bonnet, by means of multiple turns of the spindle or stem.

Q: What is the difference between a gate valve and a knife gate valve?

A: One of the differences between the gate and the knife gate valves, is that the knife gate valve often has a sharpened disc to better cut through slurry/viscous media. Also, the knife gate valve has a short face-to-face length compared to a gate valve, which is dimensionally wider.

Q: What is a 3 way gate valve?

A: A 3-way control valve stops water flow in one pipe while allowing it to flow in another. The valve can also combine water from two distinct pipes into one pipe or redirect water from one pipe into two different pipes in a modulating or three-point floating application.

Q: Why do gate valves always leak?

A: Corrosion: This is one of the major causes of valve leakage. Over time, the valve parts in contact with the process fluid lose material as it corrodes. The rate at which this happens should be predicted at the design stage, and the necessary material corrosion allowance should be included in the valve selection.

Q: How do you tell if a gate valve is open or closed?

A: When the stem is flush with the handle, the valve is closed. For Non-Rising Stem (NRS) Gate Valves, the handle will rise above the valve when open. The valve is closed when the handle is flush to the top of the valve.

Q: Why use a gate valve instead of a butterfly valve?

A: Flow regulation: A butterfly valve can modulate or throttle flow, whereas a gate valve can only be on/off. Flow resistance: A gate valve offers less flow resistance and, therefore, less pressure drop than a butterfly valve. Pressure: Gate valves can handle higher pressures than butterfly valves.

Q: Why should you close a gate valve slowly?

A: The faster the valve is closed, the more aggressively kinetic energy is converted into pressure, resulting in a higher pressure surge. The more gradually a system can slow its flow, the better a pressure surge is mitigated. Imagine gradually applying the brakes in a car compared to slamming on the brakes.

Q: How long should a gate valve last?

A: The average valves would last about 25-years, but if the central heating system is well looked after and the hot or cold water has low water deposits in the sense of scale, then the chances are, the valve may last for a longer time.
