What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Horizontal And Vertical Installation Of Wafer-type Check Valves?

The main advantages and disadvantages of horizontal and vertical disc check valve installation are spatial adaptability, media flow efficiency and disc drive reliability. Pipeline layout, media characteristics and installation environment should be considered when selecting.

The advantages and disadvantages of each installation method are obvious and are least affected by check valve type such as rotary or elevator. The main consideration is compatibility with the actual application scenario.

1.Horizontal Installation: Compatible with most common pipes for greater reliability.

Horizontal installation, with valve body axis parallel to the ground and piping running horizontally, is the most common installation method for wafer check valves.

Strengths:

More stable disc actuation: When mounted horizontally, the disc (e.g. double or single disc swing) opens naturally due to media pressure and returns to its original position due to gravity and media reverse pressure. This will result in smooth actuation with no easy bonding or sealing delays.

Widespread media compatibility: whether liquid, gas or gas-to-liquid mixture, horizontal installation ensures uniform media flow through the chamber, avoids local fluid accumulation or airflow disturbances, and minimizes impact on the disc. Easy to maintain: Horizontal pipes is usually installed at a convenient height (e.g. 1-2 m above ground). This way, it is safer and easier to operate without climbing or bending when inspecting or replacing seals.

Weaknesses:

Horizontal space occupancy a lot of space: Horizontal installation requires sufficient horizontal space to extend the pipe. In the case of dense piping (e.g. inside equipment or on the ceiling), installation may be difficult due to lack of horizontal space.

High piping coaxial degree: piping at both ends of valve must be completely horizontal and coaxial. Any misalignment in the piping may cause the disc to exert uneven force, which may lead to seal wear or leakage over time.

2. Vertical installation: Save Horizontal Space for Specific Layouts: Vertical installation requires valve body axis to be perpendicular to the ground and piping to run vertically (usually up, sometimes allowed, reference valve body marking). This applies to applications with limited space or vertical piping layouts.

Strengths: Save Horizontal Space: Vertical installation takes up only vertical height without increasing horizontal space. Suitable for situations with dense piping and limited horizontal space (e.g. vertical pipes between floors or inside equipment). Reduce fluid accumulation in pipes: For media flowing vertically upwards, vertical installation prevents media from stagnating in the valve cavity. This makes it particularly suitable for transporting liquids prone to crystallization and precipitation, such as mud and high-viscosity liquids, reducing the risk of valve disc clogging.

Weaknesses: disc operation are more susceptible to gravity: if the medium flows vertically downwards, the disc must overcome its own gravitational closure, which can lead to closure delays and increase the risk of reverse leakage. While some lightweight disks can be modified, they are not as reliable as horizontal installations.

Limited compatibility with media: Not suitable for conveying gas or gas-liquid mixtures, vertical mounting tends to accumulate gas at the top of the valve cavity, resulting in incomplete disc opening that affect flow. In addition, the weight of the disc may prevent rapid closure in the event of a gas backflow.

Difficult to maintain: Vertical pipes are usually installed in higher (e.g. above the ceiling) or lower (e.g. underground) locations. Repairs require the use of ladders or excavations, making them inconvenient and unsafe to operate.
